What Does an Automotive Service Technician Do?

To put it simply, an automotive service technician works in an automotive repair shop and provides repairs for a customer’s vehicle. With the proper training, you can learn to become an automotive service technician and join the industry. A service technician, or auto mechanic, is often hired to make repairs on an automobile’s brakes, belts, engine, and/or transmission.

Often, customers enter an automotive repair shop with vague concerns about their vehicle’s performance, such as a check engine light that won’t turn off. In this case, as an automotive service technician, it is their job to discover and diagnose issues that a customer’s car or truck may have and to make repairs or replace parts if necessary. If they complete an evaluation and find the automobile doesn’t require repairs or new parts, it falls to them to answer a customer’s questions and give them advice regarding what to do about any performance issues or other problems they are experiencing.

At Arizona Automotive Institute, we teach about the skills and qualities that make a good and successful automotive technician. A successful automotive technician diagnoses and repairs automotive issues quickly and provides a specific and clear explanation of the problems and the services rendered to a customer to make sure that they are in the loop about the status of their vehicle. They also should know how to communicate effectively with their fellow staff and customers.

Coming to AAI was one of the best investments I’ve made for my career. The instructors were very helpful [and] they passed down lots of real-world experience from their world experience in the field. […] And the coaching with the instructors was amazing.
